Alberta Legal Aid Plan - Continued Engagement

The Government of Alberta is engaging with relevant parties to strengthen Alberta's justice system and make it more accessible.

The Government of Alberta (GoA) is engaging key justice system stakeholders on how legal aid services are delivered in Alberta to ensure these services will be available for years to come, while also ensuring there is reasonable and responsible oversight in place. The GoA acknowledges the importance of consultation on matters respecting Alberta’s legal aid plan.

As part of its mandate, Justice has been asked to strengthen Alberta’s justice system and make it more accessible. A key part of this work involves consultation and collaboration with key stakeholders.

The Minister of Justice is bringing forward a policy proposal recommending increased public oversight and administration of Alberta’s legal aid plan. This proposal includes several policy options and the exploration of legislation, for the purpose of:

  • ensuring the long-term viability of Alberta’s legal aid plan and to deliver the plan and legal aid services in the most fiscally responsible, effective, and efficient way possible; and

  • ensuring reasonable governance, administrative and financial oversight for the legal aid plan.

In Fall 2024, the Ministry of Justice completed initial stakeholder engagement sessions and collected valuable information and feedback on the current state of Alberta’s legal aid plan.

The Ministry of Justice is seeking additional input and feedback on the design and structure of “any proposed new model by which the legal aid plan and legal aid services are delivered to Albertans” as outlined in the Governance Agreement respecting Legal Aid. This engagement survey will cover the important themes of legislation, governance, and service delivery models.
