Environmental Student Action Challenge

Do you have an idea for a project that could reduce the environmental footprint of your school? Alberta Environment and Protected Areas (EPA) could help make it happen!

The Environmental Student Action Challenge invites Alberta students from grades K -12 to develop a school-based initiative or project that will help minimize negative human impacts to the environment.

Students are invited to submit their project ideas for a chance to win up to $1,000 that can be used to turn their proposal into a reality – and give them hands-on experience tackling an environmental issue that directly impacts them, their school or their community. The Government of Alberta will award up to $20,000 in funding annually to successful applicants to support their environmental action projects.

Successful applicants will be selected from each school level (Division 1, 2, 3, 4).

Participating teams are invited to contribute to the online learning community! Provide real-time project updates, share tips, ask questions and inspire new levels of learning – the provincial Environmental Student Action Challenge community is a great way to explore new ideas throughout the school year.

This website is continuously updated with information to help you with your application, so check back often!

  • Highwood School has Launched its School-Wide Composting Program!

by VickyLaw , about 6 years ago

Highwood School has just launched its school-wide composting program. The Eco Club students presented how to use the compost bins properly to all classrooms, to help inform all staff and students. The Eco Club gave each class a compost bin; students are putting organics, such as their fruit peels and paper towels, into the bins. We have also placed a large-sized compost bin in the lunchroom to collect food waste during the lunch hour. During the first week of implementation, we have already reduced the waste at our school by HALF! We look forward to continuing to monitor and refine... Continue reading

  • Classroom Composting Has Officially Launched!

by emilie.giroux, about 6 years ago

FMIS has officially launched the classroom composting project in our school.  In order to get the whole school excited about composting, we created a launch video that you can view here:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7b_ItpBbPo&t=2s

So far we have been running our composters about 4-6 times a day and diverting about 9 litres of food waste daily from the landfill. We have ordered a fourth composter to help keep up with the quantity of food waste we are receiving.

The whole school has adopted the program really well and we will be presenting it at the school district board of trustees meeting next... Continue reading

  • Redwater School Outdoor Classroom

Our school project is currently on hold until the spring weather arrives (we are hoping sooner than later!) but we have our group of students from grade 5-12 who are ready to work together to get our outdoor classroom space set up.  We will be adding the rain water catchment system in April and students will begin to work up the ground to build the garden spaces and planting fruit trees as soon as the ground thaws.  We also have our junior high class creating bird and bee houses/hotels to promote and protect our precious pollinators.

  • Roof Runoff Flower Beds at Arbour Lake School

With the whole concept of “trying to make the world a better place”, our Grade 8 Natural Resources classes felt the need to try and make our school community a better place with a garden. Our first few ideas were to grow vegetables in an area on the side of the school which had around five rainwater pipes which we could use as a self regulated watering system. Unfortunately, after doing some research, we came to the understanding that the water from the roof could be polluted, making any fruits or vegetables that we were to plant unhealthy....
