Welcome to Alberta's Outdoor Recreation Channel!

Crown land covers approximately 60 per cent of Alberta’s land base and supports multiple land uses, often within the same area. Crown land may be used for:

• Industrial Use
• Agricultural Use
• Cultural Use
• Recreational Use

Types of Crown land

• Provincial Parks and Provincial Recreation Areas are areas that protect natural and cultural landscape, and provide opportunities for recreation and heritage tourism. These areas provide recreational facilities like trail networks, campgrounds and educational services (signage and interpretive programming). Wildland provincial parks are managed as provincial parks, but are more remote and offer limited or no facilities and services.
• Protected Areas include Wilderness Areas, Ecological Reserves, Natural Areas, and Heritage Rangelands. These areas are managed for conservation purposes and offer limited opportunities for non-motorized recreation.
• Public land use zones (PLUZ) are areas that are managed to support industrial, agricultural and cultural use, while providing opportunities for motorized and non-motorized recreation. A public land use zone has specific rules for all users to balance the types of land uses the area supports.
• Public land recreation areas are areas that support high volumes of recreational use. These areas may provide recreational amenities for users such as information kiosks, signage, parking, staging areas or camping areas.
• Crown land dispositions are areas of crown land that have been leased or licensed to support a specific activity or type of use. Public land dispositions will have regulations in place that allow other land uses, so long as they don’t impact the primary intended use for the land.
• Agricultural public land is an example of a public land disposition, and refers to land held under an agricultural disposition. This land is intended for crop cultivation or livestock grazing.
• Vacant public land are areas of public land outside of public land use zones that are not held under a disposition. These areas support a wide variety of recreational activities.
• Provincial trails are trails within Public Land Use Zone that have been designated to allow specific recreation activities. Provincial trails have rules to promote safe and sustainable recreation, and provide unique experiences for users.

There are endless opportunities for motorized and non-motorized recreation on Crown land. Go prepared and know the rules and regulations to have a safe and enjoyable trip, and avoid a fine.
