Alberta Fisheries Management

Alberta Environment and Parks would like to hear your perspectives about fisheries and fisheries management, with a particular focus on enhancing recreational fishing opportunities across the province. Feedback from Albertans will be reflected in the 2020 Alberta Sportfishing Regulations, which come into effect on April 1st. This feedback will also be considered as part of an updated fisheries management plan.
The province will host 11 open house events in January. Each event is 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for your convenience. Details on the open house events can be found on this page.
The proposals presented at the open houses are also available for your feedback on this site (see tabs below).
Share your thoughts on opportunities for enhanced recreational fishing in the province, and on Minister Jason Nixon's vision for fisheries management in Alberta.

Stock Pine Lake with Perch
It appears that perch stock has collapsed in Pine Lake! It is a fun fish for children to catch! Pine Lake was a very good habitat for perch until walleye was protected!

Cold Lake Size Limit for Lake Trout
Possibly a review of the minimum size for keeping Lake Trout from Cold Lake is in order. Over the last few years of fishing there, the lake appears to have a fairly healthy population. In Ontario, slot sizes of 16-22 inches have been effective in managing trout populations, as those fish are seen as the prime spawning size lakers. While that particular slot size may not work on Cold Lake, perhaps decreasing the keeper size from 75 cms (29.5 inches) slightly (5 cms or so to start) would be a good test to see how the lake trout population handles it. Maintaining the population is key, but the current health of the fishery may be able to support a decrease.

Alter size-retention in some PP1 fisheries to become trophy pike fisheries (e.g., Clear Lake, Badger)

Fishing Access Sites
Work with landowners and stakeholders to develop fishing access sites for anglers to safely park and access waters. Travel anywhere in Montana and Pacific Northwest for great examples. For a bad example: the south Deerfoot bridge in Calgary.
